Sam Scott

After 76 years on this earth, our loving husband, father and grandpa, Samuel Robert Scott passed away at the Vernal Beehive Home on April 16, 2023, after a long battle with dementia.

Sam was born in Caliente, Nevada, on Feb. 7, 1947, to Frank Morris and Fawn Lee Scott. He attended college at Southern Utah University. Welding and pipelining brought Sam to Vernal where he met and married his wife, Glenna Cooper. Sam was a diesel mechanic and later branch manager of Wheeler Machinery for forty years.

Sam was a lover of food and a terrific cook. He spent time in his youth running the river in the Grand Canyon as a boatman and cook on week-long river trips. It was one of his favorite things to reminisce about. Anyone who has camped with Sam, attended a rendezvous, or come over for weekend or holiday dinners can attest he was an excellent cook, and it was one of his great pleasures in life to find new recipes.

Sam loved history, in particular early American Western history. He loved to read about the mountain men and fur trade. For years he attended the national rendezvous in full period-specific mountain man attire, where he enjoyed black powder shooting, ax throwing and cooking.

Sam loved traveling with his wife, Glenna. They took many trips in later years, but his favorite was always Italy. He also enjoyed woodworking and made knives to sell and trade at the rendezvous as well as boxes and tables.

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Glenna: his daughters, Jennifer (Chris) Palmer, Ashley (Tyler) Ballard and Samantha (Bill) Chapoose; his grandsons, Max and Will Chapoose, Nick Palmer, Samuel and Leonardo Ballard, and his brother, Denny McCarty.

A special thank you to the Beehive Home of Vernal for their care and compassion over the last five years and Canyon Healthcare for their services.

Scott’s wishes are to have no services held. Arrangements under the direction of the Phillips Ashley Valley Funeral Home.
