A shooting, a quick response, critical situations, lives saved and suspects arrested. The high intensity during the Feb 28, 2024 response showed the bravery and skill of local responders, who were honored for their speedy response, saving two individual’s lives.
At the regularly scheduled city council meeting in Naples City, on April 25, Naples City Police Chief Nathan Simper awarded and recognized those involved in the response.
Naples City Police Department, Vernal City Police Department, Uintah County Sheriff’s Office, Adult Parole and Probation, Uintah Basin Communication Center, Gold Cross Ambulance, and Ashley Regional Medical Center employees were awarded the Unit Commendation, for their performance and dedication to safety.
Simper said their actions serve as a testament to the power of collaboration and solidarity in overcoming challenges and saving lives.
“On that fateful day, law enforcement officers and emergency medical personnel from multiple agencies responded swiftly to a chaotic and dangerous situation. Their collaborative efforts exemplified the highest standards of public service and heroism, resulting in the successful management of a crisis and the preservation of life.” Simper read aloud at the award commencement.
Local law enforcement agencies and AP&P were recognized for their exceptional coordination and professionalism in their response to the active threat by an armed suspect.
Uintah Basin Communication Center dispatchers were recognized for their part in assisting the speed and organization of the response.
Gold Cross Ambulance and ARMC were recognized for their skill in providing life-saving medical care to the injured victims.
While each agency was recognized for their specific effort, there was no question on the exemplary teamwork that took place to keep two residents alive and the entire community safe.
“Through their collective efforts, these agencies and their personnel demonstrated the utmost bravery, selflessness, and professionalism in the face of adversity. Their teamwork and unwavering commitment to duty reflect great credit upon themselves, their respective departments, and the communities they serve,” Simper read.
Simper awarded each department individually, and each awardee received a hearty handshake from Naples City council and Mayer Baker.
Feb. 28, 2024
On Feb. 28, Naples City Police Department and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to distress calls regarding a shooting.
Upon arrival to the scene, the officers discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot injuries.
The two individuals injured were hastily taken to Ashley Regional Medical Center, but due to their extensive injuries they were then transported to a hospital on the Wasatch Front.
It was not long before a suspect was identified and taken into custody.
On March 1, Naples City Police announced the arrest of Mara Anderson.
Anderson was charged with two counts attempted aggravated murder, assaulting a peace officer with a dangerous weapon, using a concealed weapon during a violent felony, domestic violence in the presence of a child, damaging/interrupting a communication device, and interfering with an arresting officer.
Anderson still awaits trial for charges in the incident.
Both victims of the shooting are alive and well.
