DWR Habitat Council allocates $3.4 million from hunting, fishing license sales to 2024 habitat restoration projects

Roughly $3.4 million was allocated to selected habitat restoration projects at the recent annual Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Habitat Council funding meeting on April 30.The DWR Habitat Council was created in 1995 by the Utah Legislature as a way to provide funds for fish and wildlife conservation that are specifically used to:Enhance fish and wildlife habitatPreserve and protect habitatManage and acquire new habitat areas for fish and wildlifeImprove hunting and fishing accessThese funds are a portion of the revenue from license, permit and certificate of registration fees related to hunting and fishing.The Habitat Council consists of eight individuals who act as an advisory board.

Steinaker canal trail extension in the works

In a recent council meeting, Keith Despain, city councilman, unveiled an ambitious plan to extend the Steinaker Service Canal Trail, presenting a potential agreement with the Uintah Water Conservancy District to address concerns and move the project forward.The proposed trail expansion aims to connect key areas along Aggie Blvd, stretching from 500 North to Highway 40, with the goal of providing improved pedestrian access to local schools, community centers, and Utah State University; An area that is already functioning as a makeshift trail for the numerous residents who use it for their daily commutes.Despite initial enthusiasm, hurdles emerged, primarily from the canal company expressing apprehensions regarding the project’s impact on their operations and infrastructure.

Taylor Mountain road to open this week

Taylor Mountain Road (FS 044) which has been closed for several months due to impending road improvements, is now set to open on May 17 after inclement weather, according to Forest Service public affairs officer Donald Jacques.Recent rain, snow, and unfavorable temperatures have continuously hindered progress on the project, preventing its initially estimated completion this past week.
